Artist Van Thanh — Biography & Exhibition History

Artist Van Thanh is a Vietnamese contemporary artist whose practice explores lacquer painting, figurative art, abstraction, and themes rooted in Vietnamese culture and everyday life. His works often bring together traditional Vietnamese artistic techniques with contemporary visual expression.

Born in the Mekong Delta, Van Thanh developed his artistic foundation through formal training and many years of independent research. He studied at the Soc Trang College of Culture and Arts from 1996 to 2000, followed by further studies at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts School from 2005 to 2010.

Throughout his career, he has continued to experiment with different materials, techniques, and artistic approaches. His practice includes traditional lacquer, oil painting, silk painting, abstract compositions, and works inspired by Vietnamese landscapes, people, customs, and cultural traditions.

An important early milestone came only 11 days after his graduation, when he presented his first solo exhibition at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts School. The exhibition featured 45 artworks representing five different artistic approaches, reflecting his extensive period of study and experimentation.

His subsequent artistic development was shaped through continued learning, exchanges with Vietnamese artists and fine arts educators, as well as international artistic contacts.
